WHAT ARE DENTAL FACETS?
Ceramic facets are thin porcelain shells applied on the visible surface of front teeth, mostly the upper ones, for harmoniously restoring their physiognomy.
Facets cover the front surface of teeth. Their role is mainly related to dental aesthetics. You will get a nicer smile by getting the chipped, used or stained teeth covered. By applying these dental facets a series of other problems such as gapped teeth or chipped teeth shall be solved.
Applying dental facets is an alternative to prosthetics with dental porcelain or zirconium crows, where the loss of dental tissue is higher. The life time of ceramic facets ranges from 5 to 10 years.
ADVANTAGES OF DENTAL FACETS
Another big advantage of dental facets is that a lot less dental tissue gets polished with dental facets as compared with dental crowns fitting.
Dental facets can be designed with various colours, similar to own natural teeth. The structure and transparency as well as the shape of dental facets are in line with the patient’ s denture but also with the complexion, skin and eye color, so as to get a more natural aspect.
MATERIALS USED
• zirconium oxide or full-Zirconium. Highly resistant, facets are manufactured only via CAD/CAM computer assisted polishing technology. This is the newest and most recommended technique.
• Pressed ceramics. Facets made of this type of ceramics are quite resistant but generally thicker than the other types of facets
• Stratified ceramics. Feldspathic ceramics is added by layers by the dental technician and the shape can easily be adapted to every patient
• Lithium disilicate. Highly resistant. Facets are designed via the same CAD/CAM technology
HOW ARE DENTAL FACETS BEING PLACED?
Placing dental facets is possible in two ways:
dental faceting with teeth polishing. Most indicated method when a dramatic change of teeth aspect is required. Teeth are prepared by removing 1-2 mm off the enamel on the outside teeth surface and from the lateral areas. This method is also indicated with oversized teeth where the application of facets without previous teeth preparation would further increase the teeth size.
Dental facet without teeth polishing (no preparation) or with minimum teeth polishing. This method is indicated with thiner teeth and is using 0,5 mm facets. The advantage consists of preserving the dental tissue.
